Why Are My Employees Leaving? Twinkies!!
Well, everyone wants to know the secret to finding more skilled labor. Trust me when I tell you they are readily available. Unfortunately, we need to take a hard look at our organization in order to understand who will thrive in your organization and who will not. A one size labor force does not fit all!
Let’s start with what Twinkies have to do with it…
When was the last time you spent some time in your associates’ breakroom on the warehouse floor? How clean is it? How many microwaves do you have? You have 125 associates and three microwaves. The trash hasn’t been removed for quite some time. The vending company allowed the machine to run out of Twinkies and they are charging your associates (making money off YOUR ASSOCIATES) $2.00 for a soda!
That Twinkie may not be important to you, but someone out there looks forward to the first break every day to feast on that Twinkie and have a moment of Zen before having to go back to the grind. However, it’s the one day he is having an exceptionally bad day; and to top it off, the vending machine is empty. So, do not allow your vending partner to charge your associates $2.00 for a soda. Protect your most valuable asset and make sure they have a breakroom that you would be proud of. Because I’m willing to bet that brand X does.
Before you consider compensation as a way to retain or hire better associates, look in the proverbial mirror and make sure you are also doing everything possible to make your associates comfortable in the workplace. They spend 8 to 12 hours a day in your facility! Ask yourself these questions:
1. Do my associates get to work in a clean environment; what are my housekeeping standards?
2. Do my associates see me; how open is my door?
3. Are my associates safe or are there hazards!?
4. Do they enjoy working in my facility or are they just there to get a paycheck?
If you are honest, you probably could do some continuous improvement exercises today and it’s possible you have a great associate who was considering leaving. However, because you took action today, they decided to stay! Also remember your core values. The standards you keep will attract superstars!
